The 21st Century Coeds Timeline

21st Century Coeds was never intended to accurately predict the future, in fact, i wouldn't be surprised if none of my predictions came true. The same goes for this timeline. The events are merely products of my imagination. UPDATED November 15 2012

1998 January 31: Estelle Hannaford, the future First President of the Lunar Republic, is born in London, United Kingdom.

1999 April 19: Carnelia celebrates 100 years of independence by launching a new national flag - a sakura blossom on a blue background. The shape of the blossom cleverly mimics the shape of the Carnelian Island. June 30: M&B Architects is founded by Derek McDermott and Nancy Bailey in Cordola, Carnelia.

2000 May 22: The Moon Base mission is announced. The return to the Moon is scheduled for the year 2012.

2001 September 5: The term "AGMI" is coined by writer Terrance Falcon in his Cordola Tribune editorial: "Frankenfood and You".

2002 January 12: Planning begins on a scheme to phase out paper currency in Carnelia.

2003 January 1: Nagoya becomes Cordola's second sister city, after Seattle. A student exchange program begins between Carnelia and Japan, fostering closer ties between the two countries and a mingling of cultures.

2004 July 4: Gigantua, a huge amusement park, is opened in Cordola. 20 000 balloons are released, inadvertantly resulting in the emergency landing of Flight 314.

2005 July 5: An extensive maglev system is proposed for Cordola. Completion of the first line is scheduled for 2011.

2006 January 1: The Smart Card Initiative begins in Carnelia. This program includes the phasing out of paper currency by the year 2017.

2007 January 1: Zircon Tower opens in Cordola. It becomes the tallest building in the city, forcing the 70 year old observation deck on King Tower to close.

2008 December 20: Toyo Miyama opens his first electronics store in Nagoya, Japan.

2009 August 2: Mega Burger celebrates its 50 years by launching the "Big Cheese".

2010 December 3: Cordola International Airport introduces retinal scans. On that same day the Carnelian Government announces that biometric passports will replace conventional ones.

2011 March 30: The Cordola Maglev opens. 29 minutes into operation, the train breaks down.

2012 February 3: Cordola University is formed from the merger of The University of Cordola and Greylock University. February 12: Humans return to the moon, starting a two year mission. First words on surface: "Watch out for what step-" August 18: Carnelia leads the world in pledging to phase out petrol powered cars entirely in 15 years.

2013 July 5: Professor Tonkins of Cordola U proposes a neural virtual reality simulation. He dubs it "Simulcra". August 1: MedusaCorp, a genetic counselling and eugenics lab, opens in Cordola. It maintains Carnelia's ban on human cloning. December 7: The District of Columbia becomes America's 51st State.

2014 February 23: First prototype of the Holotube is produced. September 20: The Moon Base mission is complete, with housing for five astronauts. December 1: Virtua Scribe 1.0 goes on sale in Carnelia. The company Miyama is formed shortly after, based in Nagoya, Japan.

2015 October 21: Cubs win World Series against Miami. (100 to 1 shot!)

2016 January 13: The West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapses, sending 1 million cubic kilometres of ice into the ocean. June 8: The first "Lunar Tourist" starts a 3 day visit to the Moon. July 5: Venice is lost to flooding. The last of its citizens are evacuated by gondola.

2017 January 1: The Carnelian Crown is now a wholly electronic currency. Every citizen has a Smart Card. January 19: War breaks out in Eastern Europe and spills over into the Middle East. It began after coordinated attacks on several countries to satisfy insatiable demand for oil following the 2016 Floods. May 28: The official opening of The Angel, a giant statue on Garisson Island in Cordola.

2018 April 16: The first of the Clone Riots in downtown Cordola. July 8: Carnelia's Genetically Improved Food Council is founded. August 11: The last cease-fire agreement is signed, ending the Resource Wars. A few skirmishes break out in South America and Africa but are quickly stopped.

2019 January 18: The final transmission from Voyager 1, the most distant probe from the Solar System, is received. March 2: Eccentric billionaire Ali Hassan Al-Fulani sends a crew of 15 to begin constructing his Daudaeus Hotel near the Lunar Base. He pledges an "out-of-this-world resort" complete by 2024. May 16: After several large corporations/banks declare bankruptcy in the previous week, stock markets all over the world crash. The 2019 Recession begins. October 29: A nuclear weapon is detonated in Geneva, Switzerland, obliterating 12 city blocks. 12 529 people are killed. December 12: For the first time, Auto-driving becomes more popular than Manual-driving in Cordola.

2020 January 30: "Entertainment Cordola" announces "The Holotube Age begins". Movies begin shooting in holovision. 3-D filming results in actors dieting even more.

2021 May 3: Carnelia's first skycar - the Prescott Devlok, goes on sale. It is only approved for flying in a short 12 km long zone outside the city limits. 10 cars are sold that day, each going for 500 000 crowns. July 21: "The Big One" - a Magnitude 8.7 earthquake rattles San Francisco, almost 120 years after the 1906 earthquake. Almost 5000 people are killed.

2022 July 7: The Crescent Bridge opens in Cordola. December 6: The last person born in the 19th Century dies.

2023 June 31: For the first time, the number of hybrid/electric cars in the 15 most developed countries on Earth exceeds the number of petrol-run cars. December 1: HoloNexus, a social networking website, is launched. It is later renamed HoloNex and finally HolX (www.holx.scl)

2024 July 3: Feasibility studies begin on a Space Elevator located in the Pacific Ocean. November 17: The Daudaeus Hotel opens.

2025 June 10: Cordola hosts the 2025 World's Fair. September 14: The maiden flight of the upper atmosphere high speed S.W.I.F.T plane.

2026 January 9: "Our Times" magazine publishes a feature story: "The Rise of Lunar Tourism". August 9: Narita Spaceport in Japan opens. September 1: The first "wheel-less car" in Carnelia is sold. December 18: Construction begins on a new network of ultra smooth "Glide-Roads", enabling cars to hover 2-8 cm above the ground.

2027 May 25: The 600 m Castilla Tower opens and becomes the tallest structure in Carnelia.

2028 December 2: The last internal combustion engine in the developed world rolls off the production line. Cars driven by such engines still exist in developing and poor countries, but are now a minority when measured on a worldwide scale.

2029 July 6: Rufus O'Reily is born in Rose Medical Center, Denver. August 11: The Cordola Tidal Barrier is completed, in response to rising water levels.

2030 January 11: Newborn Amy is found in a basket in St. Cecilia Hospital in Stockholm. March 10: Jeff Fletcher is born in Indigo Valley Hospital, Cordola. May 28: Marcy Hannaford is born in Cromwell Hospital, London. August 29: Nigel Osbourne is born in Hôpital Du Sacré-Coeur De Montréal, Montreal. September 19: "Our Times" publishes an issue entitled: "How we've Screwed up our Weather".

2031 April 14: The first skyscraper built entirely by robots is completed in Cordola, Carnelia.

2032 December 16: The first Mars landing. Erica Filmore (32) is the first human on Mars.

2033 November 13: The Armstrong Casino and Lunar Portal opens on Daudaeus. December 1: Ali Hassan Al-Fulani is announced "2033's Person of the Year" by "Our Times" magazine for his drive and vision in creating a "lunar paradise".

2034 February 3: Cordola's first Skyway opens - a 50 km stretch of airspace leading from Cordola to Castilla. Unfortunately, a skycar collides with a bird and is forced to deploy its emergency parachute. July 4: Beijing Spaceport opens. China soon becomes the largest source of Lunar tourists on the planet.

2035 December 22: The 100 000th visitor to Luna is rewarded with a Prescott Skycar.

2036 October 3: The 166m high Stratoscreamer officially opens in Gigantua.

2037 May 18: Cordolan police trial the Nautilus. July 5: Toyo Miyama becomes the richest man in the Solar System.

2038 March 2: Simulcra 2.0 is launched, using a Tactile Suit and Retinal Projector. March 19: Puerto Rico becomes America's 52nd State.

2039 May 10: Miyama Laboratories announces a breakthrough in fusion power and nanotechnology.

2040 January 11: Estelle Hannaford joins the Lunar Administrative Government. March 30: After shrinking for decades, Jupiter's Great Red Spot is reported to have vanished.

2041 September 23: Cordola wins the 2048 Olympics, beating Miami, Frankfurt and Warsaw. November 2: Lakesha Primrose (45), a popular singer, is murdered. December 15: Ernest Chilton (92), an early "Lunar retiree", dies, and becomes the first person (bodily) buried on the Moon.

2042 March 13: 14 year old Toby Macintyre appears on Holovision for the first time, in a robot commercial. April 10: The United States begins its transition to full usage of the Metric System.

2043 February 19: No Qualms wins Song of the Year Grammy for "Every Kind of Face". March 8: "Our Times" magazine publishes an issue commenting on the revival of Jazz and Big Band music. September 20: Several countries are accused of bullying and bribing the Lunar Administrive Council for exports of Helium 2 and other precious materials. December 10: Chess City, a 14-tower resort in Cephra, opens 30 years after it was envisioned.

2044 January 28: Mining begins on an asteroid towed by rockets into a safe Near Earth Orbit. May 1: M&B Architects is announced the winner of the competition to design the 243 storey Cordola Pinnacle. August 6: The 2044 Summer Olympics are held in Mumbai, India.

2045 April 30: Several companies in Asia and the Middle East threaten to land on Luna and take precious materials directly. President of the Lunar Administrive Council Estelle Hannaford vows to drive them out. December 12: The Mars Base mission is announced. A return to Mars is scheduled for 2054.

2046 January 9: Miyama Industries enters a private trade deal with the Lunar community, but worldwide protests derail it. October 12: Estelle Hannaford begins secret talks over a declaration of Independence.

2047 July 20: Estelle Hannaford announces Luna's independence, to much laughter in the United Nations. October 7: The United States signs a free trade agreement with the Lunar Republic.

2048 February 3: A malfunction at a NanoBot factory in China leads to an explosion and a flood of nanobots, killing thousands. It leads to Nanotech stocks plummeting and a world-wide market shakeup, but not as large as the 2019 stock crash. March 1: Simulcra 3.0 makes its world debut in Cordola, Carnelia. March 9: Daudaeus becomes Cordola's third sister city, due to Carnelia's financial and technological support in the last decade. April 17: "Our Times" magazine declares Cordola to be "a World Class city."
